Joining the school orchestra is determined by our music teacher Miss Sonia. Students can nominate themselves or their teacher can nominate a student from years 3 to 6. The decision for becoming a member of the orchestra is decided by Miss Sonia.
Miss Sonia takes orchestra on only two days per week, usually Wednesday and Thursday. The students work in small groups when selected and are taught a range of instruments. Each student is assigned an instrument to learn for the year. Instruments taught are:
Trumpets
Trombone
Drums
French horn
cello
Violin
Saxophone
Piano accordion
Clarinet
The school orchestra performs at school events throughout the year. Unfortunately there are only spaces for approximately 30 students. Students are able to take instruments home in most cases so that they can practice before their next lesson the following week.
The Auckland Philharmonia also provides 20 hours of tuition for selected instruments. The students in the orchestra also get to attend The Kiwi Capers concert at the end of year at the Auckland Aotea Centre.
