Future Problem Solving Group 2011
In May and July our Future Problem Solvers produced creative solution ideas about two global issues. The first was Healthy Living and the second was Air Transport. Questions researched and problem solved included:
- What impact will unhealthy habits have on the lives of the next generation?
- Will people continue to travel the globe in such large numbers or will they turn to other methods of transportation in the future?
All students contributed to their Team Work and gained encouraging feedback from our national markers ready for their competitive topic –Water Quality in Terms 3 & 4.

Future Problem Solvers and Leadership Group's Cake Stall
Our FPS and Leadership students held a cake stall to raise money to support Anesha's education and medical costs in India as well as for our Year 5/6 camp.
They ran a well organised cake stall, ensuring everyone got what they came for. they raised $400 in total. Here are some photos of the annual event:

Halogen National Leaders Day
Our Year 6 Leadership and Future Problem Solving groups attended the Halogen National Leaders Day at The Logan Campbell Centre. They were treated to 6 guest speakers: Pat Lam (Blues coach); Nick Tuitasi (ex Police); Dylan Belcher (Breakers); What Now Presenters; David Atkinson (Attitude speaker) and Live4Life; who encouraged us to develop skills that make good leaders. Nick Tuitasi reminded us that that ‘some leaders don’t get seen but their legacy lives on forever’. A real treat was seeing the ‘Laughing Samoans’ in action just before lunch...we could hardly eat our lunch afterwards from laughing!
Here are some photos that captured the memorable day for us:

- To strengthen oral and written communication skills
- To present an effective problem solving model
- To develop research techniques
- To work co-operatively in teams

The Future Problem Solving group have been studying Children in Need. As a result we held a cake stall to raise money to sponsor a child (off the rubbish dumps and chipping rocks) to attend school for a year. We aim to sponsor the same child's schooling and medical needs every year for $300 through "Kiwis for the Himalayas - Children Have Hope Trust".
We can change the world by changing one child's life at a time.

Leadership Group
Eight students have been nominated as Leaders in our school. They demonstrate their leadership abilities in the way that they set a positive example for others and contribute to the life of New Lynn School in many different activities (Kapa Haka, choir, orchestra, sports, Chinese classes, garden group, Future Problem Solving etc). They are learning to continue becoming great leaders by: encouraging others, having a leadership attitude, communicating well, working in a team to make decisions.
